How much does an AI agent cost? It depends on the size of the job you hand off, the tools it works inside, how much traffic it handles and how much a person reviews, so an honest answer is a scoped quote, not a sticker price.
This guide is for owners budgeting for a first agent. It shows what moves the number, the pricing models you will run into, and how to read a quote. If you are pricing AI in general, start with how much AI costs a small business. Agent spending is easier to plan once you know where agents sit in the rest of AI for small business.
How much does an AI agent cost? Five drivers behind the price
Five drivers set most of the price: the size of the job, the channels and tools, your volume, your review rules, and whether the agent is ready-made or custom. Each one is something you can see on a quote and change.
- The size of the job. Answering, booking and leaving a note is a short job. A job with many branches and decisions takes longer to set up and test.
- Channels and tools. Each channel (phone, text, chat, email) and each tool the agent reads and writes (calendar, CRM, books) adds setup and testing. Older tools with no clean way in add more.
- Volume. More calls and messages mean more model usage and more monitoring.
- Review rules. Approval queues, alerts and pages are part of the build. Looser rules need more testing before launch.
- Ready or custom. This is the biggest fork, so it gets its own section.
Ready agent or custom build: what drives AI agent development cost?
A ready agent is fitted to your tools and rules, while a custom agent is designed and built for a job no ready agent covers. Fitting costs less than building, because the core already exists and has been tested. Most owners start with a ready agent.
Each of our six Starter Upgrades is a ready agent, so most of its cost is fitting, not building. For many owners, the first agent we price is the Customer Agent, set up to answer your shop's calls and texts, book into your real calendar and page you when a caller needs a person. The Sales Agent often comes next, to follow up on every quote you send.
A custom agent starts with a written spec, then goes through building, separate reviews, machine checks and a walkthrough with you. Our guide to custom AI agents explains that path.
What AI agent pricing models will you see?
Most vendors use one of five models. None is right or wrong, but each puts the risk in a different place. They are per seat, per use, flat monthly, setup plus care and pay per result, and the key question for each is what is being counted.
- Per seat. A monthly fee per user. Simple, but agents do not sit in seats, so check what you are counting.
- Per use. A fee per conversation, message or call minute. Fair when volume is steady, but it can jump in a busy season. Our Kansas City cost check shows what a hail or freeze rush does to a per-use bill.
- Flat monthly. Predictable. Ask what volume it covers and what happens above it.
- Setup plus care. A one-time fee to set the agent up, then a monthly line to run and improve it.
- Pay per result. A fee per booked appointment or lead. Check who defines a result and who checks quality.
We use setup plus care: you pay once for the build, and an optional monthly plan covers keeping the agent running and getting better. See how our pricing works for the details.

Where do the hidden costs sit?
Most surprises sit outside the quote, in your own business. Plan for them up front and they stop being surprises. Your team's time early on, messy data, fees in your own tools, rising usage and changes after launch are the usual ones.
- Your team's time early on. Someone writes the rules with us and approves drafts in the first weeks.
- Messy data. A customer list full of duplicates or a calendar nobody trusts needs cleanup first.
- Fees in your own tools. An add-on, a phone number or a connection your software charges for.
- Growth. Usage rises as volume rises, which is usually good news, but it should be in the budget.
- Changes after launch. New services and new rules mean new setup work.
How to read an AI agent quote, line by line
A fair AI agent quote lets you see what you are paying for and what you could leave out. It names the job in plain words, every channel and tool, the human gates and the volume the monthly line covers, with one-time and monthly costs on separate lines.
- The job, described in plain words, with what "done" looks like.
- Every channel and tool the agent will touch.
- The human gates: what waits for approval and who gets paged.
- One-time costs and monthly costs on separate lines.
- What volume the monthly line covers.
- Who supports the agent after launch, and how you leave. Your data, customer records and logins stay yours.
An example: two quotes, side by side
This is an illustration, not a customer story. A plumbing shop gets two quotes for after-hours answering. Quote A is a low per-conversation fee for website chat only. It does not book into the calendar or keep a log the owner can read. Quote B has a setup fee and a care plan. It covers calls and texts, books into the real calendar, starts with every reply approved and keeps a log of each action. When a caller reports water pouring through a ceiling, it pages the on-call plumber, and anyone in danger is told to call 911.
The owner asks Quote A three questions: who books the job, what happens at two in the morning, and can I see what it said? The answers make the choice for them.
What a lower price should never cut
A lower price should never cut approvals, people decisions, the action log, plain disclosure or least access. A cheap agent that skips the safety net is not cheaper, because the mistakes land on your customers. Whatever the budget, keep all five.
- Approvals. A person sets prices, discounts, refunds and quotes, and approves anything public.
- People decisions. Hiring, staff matters, and legal, medical or tax calls stay with people.
- A log of every step the agent takes, kept so that a changed entry stands out, because AI can be wrong and you need to see where.
- Plain disclosure. Customers are told they are dealing with AI, and a request for a human is always honored.
- Least access. A booking agent opens the calendar, not the bank, which is the security principle of least privilege (opens in a new tab) at work. The SBA's cybersecurity advice (opens in a new tab) likewise says to give admin access only to trusted staff and to check who has access on a regular basis. The models run privately or on equipment you control, and none of your data trains AI models.
Can you pay for an AI agent monthly?
Yes. The care plan is already monthly, and qualified businesses may be able to spread the setup into monthly payments through our financing partner. Setup and care stay on separate lines of the quote, so you can see exactly which payment covers which part.
Weigh any payment against the work the agent takes off your team. Our guides on how to budget for AI and how an AI build can help pay for itself show how to set that up with your own numbers. For what agents do day to day, see AI agents for small business.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI agent cost per month?
The monthly cost is the care: hosting, monitoring, model usage and improvement time. It rises with volume and the number of channels, not with the size of your team. Ask what volume the monthly line includes and what happens in a busy month.
How much does it cost to build an AI agent?
Building from scratch costs more than fitting a ready agent, because it starts with a written spec and goes through building, reviews and testing. The cost follows the number of steps, decisions and tools in the job. We quote it after mapping the job with you.
How much does an AI agent cost to run?
Running costs are model usage, hosting, phone or text service, and someone watching the logs. Text and email are usually lighter to run than phone calls. A quote should show this as its own line.
How much should an AI agent cost?
Enough to pay for careful setup, real approvals and support after launch, and less than the work it takes off your team is worth. Count what the leak costs you today, such as missed calls or hours spent chasing invoices, then compare.
How much does an AI voice agent cost?
A voice agent usually costs more than a text agent, because it adds a phone number, speech both ways, call time and more testing. After-hours rules and on-call paging add setup too. Our guide to AI receptionist cost covers the phone side in detail.

Book a free workflow consult and we will scope one agent with you: the job, the channels, the tools it connects to and the approvals you want. Afterward, you get a written quote with each cost driver on its own line. We work from the Kansas City metro and meet owners face to face or by video call.
